Kilim rugs are flat-woven textiles known for their vibrant patterns, cultural significance, and artisan craftsmanship. Originating from regions such as Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia, these rugs are not just decorative items but also carry stories, traditions, and symbolism passed down through generations.
Key Features of Kilim Rugs:
- Flat-Woven Technique: Unlike knotted rugs, kilims are made using a flat-weave method, resulting in a thin, lightweight textile with no pile.
- Geometric Patterns: Often feature bold, symmetrical designs such as diamonds, hexagons, and stylized floral or animal motifs.
- Natural Materials: Traditionally woven from wool, sometimes with cotton warps, and dyed using natural plant-based or mineral dyes.
- Double-Sided: Because of the weaving technique, kilims are usually reversible, with the design visible on both sides.
- Symbolism: Many motifs have meanings—such as protection, fertility, or luck—imbuing each rug with cultural and personal significance.
- Versatile Use: Commonly used as area rugs, wall hangings, cushion covers, or even bags and furniture covers.
- DO NOT brush or scrub the rug.
- Only vacuum clean it periodically. Avoid using vacuum beater brush mode
- If spills occur, blot immediately. Do not rub the stain.
- Rotate occasionally to equalize wear.
- Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening and piling.
